It's National Poetry Month...

Ye gads...I find myself committed to the National Poetry Month challenge on Poetic Asides, a poem a day for thirty days...

I have never done anything like this before. Being of a very spontaneous persuasion, the discipline necessary for a poem a day would normally be something I might... avoid. ~rolls eyes~

Surprisingly the challenge is into its fourth day and I have written four poems and posted them on the site. Believe it or not I am enjoying the discipline and the fact that when I wake up there is a new prompt waiting for me every day.

I don't know if I'll write anything amazing or really cool, but I'm writing. I don't think my poems are the worst, they are certainly not the best but they are poems and I'm writing them. The hardest thing for me is that I don't have a couple of days to leave the poem alone, come back to it and revise it. I write, correct, fiddle with, then post - that is a little nerve racking. All in all I'm enjoying this though. I really want the certificate and button for my blog that says I completed the challenge.

Day 1 Prompt: Origin

Troubled eyes stare rigidly into
an unknown future as the train
pulls out, taking the past
forever out of reach

Dark memories and scars lock
into a hidden corner of a mind
searching for a grip on the new
reality

Suitcase in hand she gathers
herself and steps out into the
dim light of dusk, one step at
a time moving forward
never wanting to look back.

Day 2 prompt: Outsider

Worn work boots left
carelessly on the step
a warning--do not disturb
voices filter softly from
inside the house music
playing in the background

pain and jealousy
a harsh reminder of why
he lives on the edge

It should be him in there
whispering words of love
holding her close
it's not supposed to be
him left standing in the
cold with his head bowed

Defeat
a harsh reminder of why
he lives on the edge

~~

Day 3 prompt: The problem with...

The problem with my Dentist...

My Dentist dressed in
his whites with a
smile infers--
I'm going to hurt you
you won't feel a thing

he offers no promises
and tells no lies

presents you with
a bill large enough to
water your eyes

I think I'm going to faint
from the sound of the drill
quick give me that stuff
guaranteed to make me
feel nil--

Oh damn, I feel real ill

~~

Day 4 Prompt: Animal

White fur fluffed against the cold
gray nose sniffing he scents the air
always aware he might need to
run and hide

Ears twitching he's listening
who is that stranger there

ah
it's only her
it must be dinner time

With a spring and a bounce
his Highness dines in state
no manners ever, he cannot
wait

He has no pride you know
this pink eyed bunny the
Prince of our back yard

~~

I hope I'm not going to cringe when this is all over...all thirty, (yup all 30) of those poems are going to appear on this blog.

Love,

  1. while I'm partial to the bunny poem they're all very good...and I think the point is to just get you writing...you can edit them later if you like...I won't mind.

One of my blog friends used one of these writing things to help her get her book written.

By the way I've posted the very final episode of 'Paternity', Pip's story on Journeys in Creative Writing. I thought you'd like to know.

  3. My vote for best of show so far is the outsider...but all four are well done and not in need of any tinkering that I see.

  4. I love the variety. I am impressed that you are writing a poem every day for the month, and I can't wait to see the rest.

  5. Wow ok a bombardment of poems!

    Poem 1
For some reason I though instantly of Harry Potter, the'r first jpurney to school on the train stepping out of one and into another but I could be being a bit of a nerd there....^^ love it anyway

    Poem 2
Oooh... I like it, it feels assassiny/spy-like ^^ like someone regretting their lifestyle

    Poem 4
Aww cute ^^ and you captured the haughty air that rabbits seem to carry very well
