for your mom and mine - connections

beneath my breast
my heart races -
aches with intensity
I clutch at memories
some yours, hers
tangled with mine

I see you two-stepping
your life dancing in front of me
the scenes I imagine
cause a melancholy
to rise up inside me
in ways I can’t find the words for
only emotions
beyond my comprehension
wound around love
sight unseen

on my left my mum
the girl she was
beckons me to tell her story
on the right you hold my attention
marigolds in your hair -
a baffling connection

who am I?
who were either of you?
I cannot see the fullness of the past
have words too few to do us credit
love you - is all I can say.

clarity of vision

I read you word for word
from first thought
through your dreams
and nightmares

each comma
period
intimate cough

every time you slept
wept
kept going for appearance sake

saw your photographs
meaningful wrinkles and
the blank spaces of lovers
who left no trace.

read between the lines

  read between the lines

she’s young
filled with yearnings
inexperienced
eager

determined to achieve her goal

step by step
nimble fingers
shape and cut the
fabric of dreams
glue and persistence
piece it all together

          delighted because it is what
she had hoped for from the
first scant idea

little girls know no boundaries
don’t always think of difficulties
that may prevent them realizing
their dreams

grown girls often lose their way
drowned out by the voice of reason
the caution of doubt
and fear of failure.

pale moonlight...
leaves flirting with the breeze
